This program is geared toward those students who already have a reasonable Spanish language level and therefore don't require general Spanish any more. This program will allow them to widen their skills with Medical Spanish at a rapid pace. It takes two to four weeks with 4 hours of private instruction a day. The material covered will depend on the student's requirements and areas of interest. Different methods of teaching will be implemented according to the specific needs of the students, including audio lingual, audio visual, magisterial, immersion and communication systems. Each student will be provided with a grammar and vocabulary textbook. In the afternoon students will have time to discover San José, do some Spanish exercises or practice what they have learned in school by doing an internship.
The students will obtain a list of basic vocabulary and a pamphlet containing dialogue and expressions used in the medical profession. The dialogue portion will represent a patient / doctor relationship and include acquiring a patient´s medical history, medications taken, aliments, symptoms etc., besides including the specific anatomical terminology.
In addition, this program includes observation opportunities (in Costa Rica it is almost impossible to find hands on volunteer work due to heavy regulations) in local clinics and hospitals where you can practice what you have learned in the classroom. Here you will learn all the appropriate terminology needed to practice medicine. This is the most comprehensive program of its kind. There are some days when you will be observing in the hospital or clinics and listen what you have learned in class. Observations will take place twice a week for 2 hours per visit and are subject to availability.
